Spatial scale in prescribed fire regimes: an understudied aspect in conservation with examples from the southeastern United States

چکیده
Abstract The idea that not all fire regimes are created equal is a central theme in research and conservation. Fire frequency ( i.e., temporal scale) likely the most studied regime attribute as it relates to conservation of fire-adapted ecosystems. Generally, converges on primary filter plant community assembly structure, which often critical goals. Thus, success commonly linked regimes. spatial scale may also be vital outcomes, but this underrepresented literature. In our global, contemporary literature search, we found 37 published syntheses concerning effects prescribed over last decade. those syntheses, only 16% included studies reported data-based inferences related fire, whereas 73% discussion empirical scale. Only one discussed explicitly tested extent, none were experiments manipulating Further, understanding spatial-scale-dependent patterns relevant because two databases fire-occurrence data from United States indicated among lightning-ignited fires have been mismatched past few decades. Based rich ecological base demonstrates pervasive scale-dependent ecology, relationships outcomes likely. Using examples southeastern States, explored potential for fire. particular, highlighted (a) influence wildlife populations by dispersion habitat components, (b) modulate structure affecting seed dispersal mechanics herbivory. Because understudied occurring, encourage researchers address prescribed-fire using comparative manipulative approaches.

Landscape-scale disturbance events, including ecological restoration and fuel reduction activities, can modify habitat and affect relationships between species and their environment. To reduce the risk of uncharacteristic stand-replacing fires in the southwestern United States, land managers are implementing restoration and fuels treatments (e.g., mechanical thinning, prescribed fire) in progre...

Understanding relationships between variability in historical fire occurrence and ocean–atmosphere oscillations provides opportunities for fire forecasting and projecting changes in fire regimes under climate change scenarios. We analysed tree-ring reconstructed regional climate teleconnections and fire–climate relationships in upper elevation forests (.2700m) from 16 sites in eight mountain ran...
متن کاملClimatic and Landscape Influences on Fire Regimes from 1984 to 2010 in the Western United States
An improved understanding of the relative influences of climatic and landscape controls on multiple fire regime components is needed to enhance our understanding of modern fire regimes and how they will respond to future environmental change. To address this need, we analyzed the spatio-temporal patterns of fire occurrence, size, and severity of large fires (> 405 ha) in the western United Stat...

In 2010, the United States adopted its first-ever comprehensive set of health system reforms in the Affordable Care Act (ACA). Implementation of the law, though politically contentious and controversial, has now reached a stage where reversal of most elements of the law is no longer feasible. The controversial portions of the law that expand affordable health insurance coverage to most U.S. cit...
